Thyroid in Ayurveda: A Holistic Perspective

Updated: Apr 6

The thyroid gland, a small butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck, plays a vital role in regulating metabolism, energy levels, and overall hormonal balance. In modern medicine, thyroid dysfunction is broadly categorized as hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, offers a deeper, individualized, and holistic understanding of thyroid imbalances rooted in dosha theory and lifestyle alignment.

Ayurvedic Understanding of the Thyroid

Ayurveda does not refer to the thyroid gland by name in classical texts, but the symptoms of thyroid imbalance can be correlated with disorders of Agni (digestive fire), Ojas (vital essence), and imbalances in the Doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

• Hypothyroidism generally aligns with Kapha dosha imbalance, manifesting as weight gain, fatigue, cold intolerance, constipation, and sluggishness.

• Hyperthyroidism is more associated with Pitta and Vata aggravation, showing up as restlessness, weight loss, anxiety, palpitations, and heat intolerance.

Root Causes in Ayurveda

From an Ayurvedic lens, thyroid disorders stem from a combination of factors:

• Weak Agni (digestive fire): Leading to ama (toxins) accumulation.

• Mental stress and emotional suppression.

• Poor diet: Excessive consumption of heavy, cold, or processed foods.

• Lifestyle habits: Sedentary lifestyle, irregular routines, or overexertion.

• Disruption in Srotas (body channels), especially the Medovaha srotas (fat metabolism), Manovaha srotas (mind channels), and Rasavaha srotas (lymphatic system).

Symptoms of Thyroid Imbalance in Ayurvedic Terms

Hypothyroidism (Kapha imbalance)

• Lethargy and low energy (Tamas)

• Weight gain and water retention (Ama and Meda dhatu dushti)

• Cold hands and feet (reduced Agni)

• Dry skin and hair (Rasa and Rakta dhatu imbalance)

• Depression or dullness of mind (Kapha influence on Manovaha srotas)

Hyperthyroidism (Vata-Pitta imbalance)

• Insomnia, restlessness (Vata aggravation)

• Heat intolerance and sweating (Pitta imbalance)

• Palpitations, tremors (Rajo guna dominance)

• Anxiety, irritability (Agitated mind channels)

• Muscle weakness and fatigue (Dhatu kshaya – tissue depletion)

Ayurvedic Management of Thyroid Disorders

Ayurveda focuses on restoring balance, detoxifying the body, and rejuvenating the tissues. Management includes diet, herbs, lifestyle changes, yoga, and stress reduction.

1. Diet (Ahara)

• For hypothyroidism: Light, warming, easily digestible food. Favor spices like ginger, black pepper, cumin, and turmeric to ignite Agni.

• For hyperthyroidism: Cooling, nourishing, and grounding foods. Include milk, ghee, sweet fruits, and whole grains.

2. Lifestyle (Vihara)

• Follow a regular daily routine (Dinacharya).

• Get enough restorative sleep.

• Practice abhyanga (self-massage) with balancing oils acccording to your Ayurvedic body type (Prakriti).

3. Herbs (Aushadhi)

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera),  Guggulu (Commiphora mukul), Kanchanara Guggulu, Brahmi, Jatamansi, and Shankhpushpi.

Note: Herbs should be used under guidance of an Ayurvedic practitioner.

4. Panchakarma

• Detoxification therapies like Virechana (purgation), Nasya (nasal oil therapy), and Basti (medicated enema) can help cleanse the channels and rejuvenate the endocrine system.

5. Yoga and Pranayama

• Gentle asanas like Sarvangasana, Matsyasana, and Setu Bandhasana help stimulate the thyroid.

• Pranayama techniques such as Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) and Bhramari (humming bee breath) calm the nervous system and balance hormones.
